Heartfelt Handlooms

Heartfelt Handlooms

At the very end of my first trip to India (as Sapana), I found them. Small clutches made from Dhurrie rugs. I couldn’t resist. I bought a few as gifts, not really knowing what I’d stumbled on. Everyone I gave them to loved them; I carried mine everywhere.

On my next trip back, I needed more details to understand the process and what made these bags so special.  I asked to see where the Dhurries were made. We drove out of Jaipur to a small village, and I sat and watched rugs being woven on the loom. That moment helped me connect the dots it's also when I learned, these weren’t just rugs, they were a tradition. A piece of India that’s been passed down for centuries, keeping families working and weaving.

We started by using ready-made rugs for our bags. Then I learned how to design my own; simple patterns and colors I loved.  A few years ago I asked Amit, our photographer in India, to capture the looming process for me, and that’s the video you see here. I wanted you to be as taken with the process as I was.

These bags are my daily go-to. Grocery runs, travel days, hauling too much stuff to Round Top ... they’ve been with me everywhere. And now, for Labor Day, the entire Dhurrie Collection is 30% off.
